Vic and Leslie Trautwein have lived in the Dominican Republic (DR) working with Kids Alive since 2002. Vic co-directs the operations of the seven Kids Alive schools, three residential programs and an independence program that offers university scholarships. Leslie oversees preventive medical care, emergency care and chronic care as well as the nutrition and dental health programs.
The need in the DR is great, and they work hard to break cycles of spiritual and material poverty that have existed in some families for generations. Kids Alive serves more than 2,000 children and youth, and the staff has grown to over 300 nationals, including 75 former at-risk youth in professional roles such as classroom teachers.
